A Villa in South Africa Wins The Quinquennial Tile Award

Sassuolo, 3rd November 2016 – Overlooking one of the most spectacular stretches of the South African coastline is the project that won the fourth edition of The Quinquennial Tile Award. Created by Fincibec Group, this international award is dedicated to all the architects and designers who in their projects use ceramic products of the Monocibec, Century and Naxos brands (the group’s three companies).
The villa, called “Hesquin” and built on Wilderness Western Cape at the end of 2015, was designed by the BESPOKE design by Eddie da Silva architecture firm (George – Western Cape province, South Africa). The style trait of this project consists in the large glass surfaces fitted into a frame that is light and luminous despite being black, in perfect syntony with the requirements of contemporary architecture. The design, which is deliberately minimalist to obtain the highest aesthetic clearness, is expressed through the choice of colours, the intentional asymmetry of the volumes, the flat roofs and the exclusive use of right angles. The final result is a tidy space in which extreme care for details stands out - a functional, modern building characterised by the use of natural materials.
The ceramic surfaces have been selected because they can harmoniously fit into the project with coherence of style. The wood-effect aesthetics of Woodtime (Monocibec) and the aesthetics around the cement and stone texture of Proxima (Century), which have the colour grey as common feature - chosen by the designer as the main theme of the interiors - have provided the right touch of character and warmth to the rooms. Crucial to the successful outcome of the project was the contribution of the Fincibec importer, Stiles by Steve Joubert (George – Western Cape province, South Africa), who worked in synergy with the architect and the ceramic producer.
Through the fifth (currently ongoing) edition of the award, The Quinquennial Tile Award is continuing to search for and explore the most significant constructions that involve ceramic materials. Projects in the residential, public and trading/industrial sectors built between 1/1/2013 and 31/12/2017 can be entered until 31 March 2018. The authors of the five best projects will win a “Round the World flight” ticket.
