New from Interface Hospitality: The Portmanteau Collection and More

(NEW YORK, NY—NOVEMBER 2015)— Interface Hospitality is adding to its impressive portfolio four new carpet tile collections that share a common theme: exploration. The collections will be front-and-center, along with an ingenious color toolbox that promises to inspire designers to explore custom palettes for their projects, at Boutique Design New York, November 8-9, Booth #445 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
According to Interface VP of Hospitality, Charley Knight, as the profile – or stereotype – of the business traveler has evolved, so too have hospitality environments. “We are seeing a shift towards subtler environments, with a judicious use of color, and a greater emphasis on pattern and texture. These new products are unique in their flexibility, with enough depth, pattern and visual interest to carry a neutral palette, but also the option to customize a colorway that’s bold enough to suit other projects.”
The World At Your Feet
Portmanteau™ references far-flung locales and is a shamelessly lush collection of 19 25cm x 1m Skinny Planks™ and 50cm x 1m planks. It draws deeply from the power of decoration and ornamentation to evoke memories and lift spirits. Six groupings of patterns are offered, ranging from organic to traditional to modern. Each grouping – which includes a pattern and two transitions – also contains four distinct pile heights that create an optical effect as if the motif is fading in and out.
The system allows a single theme to be carried throughout an entire property, but with a sense of movement and variation as those tiles with more defined patterns combine with simpler textures. Transition tiles incrementally diffuse the patterns’ texture, so there can be the appearance of a gradual shift in the design or an abrupt and dramatic change. With one texture, shared by all patterns, Portmanteau creates a seamless, monolithic flow that obscures individual tiles and lends itself beautifully to freeform floorscapes.
A Global View
Equal Measure™, Near & Far™ and Narratives™ feature biophilic elements that can help architects and designers create a nature-inspired oasis within hospitality interiors. Not unlike the mix of flora that carpets forest floors, these new products can stand alone, but combine exquisitely with existing Interface Hospitality square, plank and Skinny Planks designs. Both evoke a sense of movement, offering endless opportunities for exploration and pattern play.
Three 25 cm x 1m Skinny Planks styles comprise Equal Measure: EM553, a carved, irregular pattern that recalls well-worn cobblestones; EM551, an understated, low-profile texture that allows the design of a space to shine; and EM552, a transition tile that bridges the two with both patterned and textural elements. Like the crossroads of two streets, Equal Measure moves easily in four directions, end-to-end and side-to-side. Offered in 8 neutral colorways, the Skinny Planks can be composed in a variety of applications: ashlar and herringbone installations; energetic, graphic configurations; or in combination with any of the company’s other Skinny Planks or square carpet tile designs.
Near & Far’s organic design DNA is clear, and the artisan’s hand is evident in the shape and materials that are the beneficiaries of modern technology. Nuanced effects are created through deliberate and precise color placement, with texture and finish contributing their fair share.
NF400 is a subdued study in shade and hue, with striations that run the length of the 25cm x 1m Skinny Planks. NF401 turns up the volume on these elements, incorporating depth and dimension with carving and curvilinear movement. The juxtaposition of the two plank options draws attention to the edges, adding a third design element for architects and designers to explore.
Narratives tells a tale of two designs that can create a singular impact.
NS230 feels as though it was drawn from the ancient and exotic with a distressed scroll pattern. The interplay of light with its varying depths and sculpted details tricks the eye, as it appears to shimmer and then fade. In contrast, NS231 is straightforward and simple, with the ability to balance and ground everything near it. Any composition with the two together is distinctive, with dramatic changes in fullness and texture. A shared Skinny Planks 25cm x 1m format and soft, neutral palette bring the system together in a way that’s compelling and unique.
Cool Tool + More
To help designers customize these and other Interface Hospitality products, the company is launching a new Color Studio box, which features 244 small tufted disks of color options. According to Knight, Color Studio was designed to be much more than a tool to communicate color choices to the company’s sales and design teams. “We see this box as a springboard to imagination and creativity,” he said. “It’s another way to dive deep into customization options, to create a one-of-a-kind look for any project through one-of-a-kind color compositions.”
In addition to its in-booth display, the brand also can be found in BDNY’s social lounge #225. Designed by Stonehill and Taylor, the space was inspired by ‘lacy’ homes in Siberia, and it features a soft, cool palette, graphic artwork, structured geometric millwork, and sheer lacy walls that filter dappled light throughout. Equal Measure Skinny Planks were the flooring choice, favored for their ability to visually transition from warm to cool hues.
The collection perfectly embodies the design concept of the lounge and will help set the tone for active, lively gatherings throughout the show.
