Representative Hearing on Productivity in the Workforce
The U.S. building industry is under increasing pressure to deliver high-performance buildings to meet the needs of owners, occupants and government. At the same time, there is an increasing concern from multiple segments of the industry on the availability of a skilled workforce. In recognition of the impact the productivity and availability of a strong workforce has on all aspects of the building industry, the National Institute of Building Sciences will conduct a representative hearing on September 25, at the organization’s Headquarters at 1090 Vermont Ave., NW, Suite 700, in Washington, D.C. The hearing will provide an opportunity for representatives from the U.S. building industry to speak about the challenges they face and offer potential solutions. While the deadline to submit oral testimony has passed, industry representatives are encouraged to provide written testimony up through October 10. The hearing is open to anyone interested in attending and listening to the testimony. See the schedule of presenters. View the procedures for submitting written testimony. Sign up to attend the hearing.

MMC Webinar: Disasters and Infrastructure
In recent years, a number of disasters around the world have caused damage to critical functions in affected communities. Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina; tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri and Moore, Oklahoma; and earthquakes in Christchurch (New Zealand), Bío-Bío (Chile) and Nepal all resulted in severe damage to local hospitals, putting great strain on the healthcare systems of the impacted regions. The next National Institute of Building Sciences Multihazard Mitigation Council (MMC) webinar, “Disasters and Infrastructure,” will spotlight the importance of protecting such critical infrastructure. Judith Mitrani-Reiser, PhD, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Emergency Medicine, and Director of the Sensor Technology and Infrastructure Risk Mitigation (STIRM) Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University, will present this webinar. To attend the free “Disasters and Infrastructure” webinar on Tuesday, September 29 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm EDT, sign up now.
